Hi fellow Singaporeans!
It has been on my mind for the longest time whether I should start a blog on this 'career' in Singapore. Well I think it's about time now. I shall start from the beginning, as the above subject title suggests that reflects what all Uber or Grab Private Hire Drivers would be thinking when the idea of doing this work first pops up in their heads. And yes, in order for me to comment or even dare to start this post means I have been there and done it, so kindly do not doubt my qualifications, thank you.
Alright, so let's zoom into the topic agenda. So for people who contemplate whether to do this work, I guess they fall into these few broad categories:-
1) Have full-time work but clearly have spare time after office hours to make some extra cash.
2) Running own businesses (anyone who has $0 salary - e.g. insurance / property agents) and feels the need to bring in some income daily as the main business itself may not bring in revenue daily.
3) Already doing part-time work and wants to add on as additional work portfolio.
4) Unhappy with current employment and considering this as alternate career switch.
5) Unemployed or Retirees.
**I will not be able to address fully all the above categories within one single post, but as you progress your reading on my blog you realize that I actually do cover along the way. And I do not advocate whether it is good or bad, be it whatever decisions you decided to take to do this or not. I am just kindly sharing my personal experiences and opinions and let you be the judge.
Okay, so for those in Category 1, I think it is no harm generally to do this if you feel that you are satisfied and managing your day job and family time very well. And the car rental market in Singapore is generally abundant in supplies so there should not be a problem finding a suitable car to do this in your free time. I will just share my perspectives in short the pros and cons as below:-
Pros:
i) Have a car to drive around for personal use during weekends (or after work hours)
ii) Extra pocket money
iii) New and clean car (most Uber / Grab cars I rode are brand new)
Cons:
i) Rental terms may not be exactly in your favour (e.g. if rent from after work 6pm, some rental companies charge day by day)
ii) You might end up spending more (especially if you allocate more for personal use than actual driving work)
iii) Petrol costs are rather high (when you do not rent a Hybrid model car)
iv) Liable for any sort of damages including minor key scratches on car body
Alright that's it for this post, will write more details for others when i got time in the near future. Cheers!
